The jury of the Broermann Medical Innovation Award announced today that Professor Matthias H. Tschöp of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Professor Svetlana Mojsov of The Rockefeller University in New York and Professor Richard DiMarchi of Indiana University will receive the award for their pioneering contributions to the treatment of obesity.

The LMU President is being honored for his transformative discoveries in translational metabolic research which, together with the work of Mojsov and DiMarchi, enabled the development of the first medicines capable of producing substantial weight loss, markedly improving blood-glucose control and reducing the long-term risk of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and oncological disease.

Endowed with €1 million, the Broermann Medical Innovation Award was established in 2024 by Dr. Bernard große Broermann to advance breakthrough discoveries with the potential to benefit patients around the world. At its inaugural presentation in 2025, the prestigious award was conferred on the American scientists Professor Carl June of the University of Pennsylvania and Professor Michel Sadelain of Columbia University. They were recognized for their pioneering role in developing CAR T-cell therapy, which has transformed the treatment of cancer.

Professor Matthias H. Tschöp has served as President of LMU since October 2025. As a researcher and professor in the United States, as founding director of the Helmholtz Diabetes Center and as Chair of Metabolic Diseases at the Technical University of Munich, he played a decisive role in advancing the development of effective therapies for obesity.

The award ceremony will take place on 17 November 2026, at the Hessian State Chancellery in Wiesbaden. The prize will once again be presented by Boris Rhein, Minister-President of the State of Hesse.
